Collis Johnson Jr. was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on November 17, 1946, where he attended elementary, junior high, and high school. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1965. After high school, he attended Langston University in Oklahoma and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After completing his college degree, he was accepted into Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry and graduated in 1973 earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.  He was accepted into and completed a family practice residency from 1973 to1974 at Martin Luther King Hospital in Los Angles, California.  After a brief practice experience at Pilot City Health center in Minnesota, he moved to Denver, Colorado in 1977 to begin his private practice.Collis Johnson Jr.

Collis Johnson was appointed to the State Board of Dental Examiners in 1997 by Governor Romer and reappointed to a second term by Governor Owens in 2001. He completed eight years on the Dental Board as the only African American to serve. He is a six year member of the local chapter of the Prosthodontic Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry.  He has been Involved in numerous non-profit Boards and Community service organizations.
 
Dr. Johnson is a life member of the American Dental Association, the Colorado Dental Association, and the National Dental Association. He started an endowment fund at Meharry Medical College which awards an academic scholarship to a third year Dental student. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  and Shorter Community AME Church. Collis and his wife, Marsha, have three children, Jonathan, Rachael, and Laura.
